I'm writing this entry from the comfort of our hotel in Christchurch NZ, on the South Island. It's Tuesday night, and yes, we left Sunday morning to get here, and it seems like all we've done is drive. Sunday morning we left the north and made it to New Plymouth (595 km). It rained the entire way. We had a great stop for lunch at a place called Hayes Common, in Hamilton. But, unfortunately I have nothing interesting to tell you about New Plymouth. We watched the men's final that night, which ended at 2:00 am our time. Go Sinner!

Monday morning, we drove from New Plymouth to Wellington (354 km) and had some sunshine along the way. The NZ roadways have the most amazing flowers planted on the shoulder (agapanthus, hydrangea, crocosmia, and red hot poker). Of course we're flying down the road and the flowers are hard to photograph. It was cold and windy in Wellington, but we found a cool pub and had a nice dinner.

Tuesday morning we caught the car ferry from Wellington to Picton. We had booked seats in a quiet lounge on the boat and had a great breakfast on board as well. There are a few photos below of the ferry, the crossing, and the south island as we arrived in Picton. We passed the sister ship in the channel, which was a mirror image of our ferry. The deer farm is right outside Picton, and we've seen more since. We drove from Picton to Christchurch (336 km) in 4 hours. The views of the ocean as you come down the coast are absolutely stunning. Inland, the landscape looks like central California. Miles of grape vines, crops, and dry, brown hills. We'll explore Christchurch on Wednesday and then we'll drive to Lake Moeraki on the west side of the South Island (491 km) on Thursday for a 2 night stay at the Wilderness Lodge.

To quote my friend Linda,"it seemed like a good idea at the time!" We should have flown from Auckland, but oh well! We're having fun exploring and it's warm, and the wine is cheap and good.

We made it to Auckland on Thursday, and drove ourselves (safely) downtown during rush hour. On Friday morning we traveled 4 hours north to the Bay of Isles and stayed 2 nights in Paihai. Saturday morning we took a boat tour of the Bay of Isles and then hoped off in Russell and caught a proper taxi (the only one) to an amazing winery (Omata Estate Vineyards) where we did a flight tasting (the rosé won) and a lunch of thin crust fire baked pizza. We walked among the vines, which will be harvested next month and then caught our taxi back to town and jumped on the foot ferry home to Paihai. Below are of few photos of this area and our boat trip. It was overcast so they don't do the scenery justice. Check out the youtube video of the winery and kitchen which is included below. Tomorrow (Sunday am) we start the drive South to New Plymouth and then onto Wellington.

Oh, and for the tennis fans, how about the Djokovic vs. Sinner match! Zverev vs. Medvedev! Amazing! Women's final is tonight our time (we are streaming the tennis in NZ)! Men's final tomorrow! Can't wait!

We've spent 8 days in total at the Aus Open, and it did not disappoint! The city, the food, the tennis, the WEATHER, were all terrific. If you love tennis, then this is a great slam to attend.

Jim is downstairs buying bags of licorice to take home. We also spent hours in the downtown area searching for a Starbucks Melbourne Mug (success!) which is one of our only souvenirs.

I'm including a few photos of our last days here....and more tennis photos are loaded on the photos tab for those of you who love tennis. a) Melbourne Skyline, b) cool indoor victorian mall, c) Flinders Station, d) Jim trying on a pork pie hat at the Queen Victoria Market (we did not buy it), and e) Jim pointing to the F1 Race which is his dream for next time and f) an adorable corgi named Norie! I almost stole this dog from his owner.

We are off tomorrow morning early, heading to New Zealand. More adventures to follow.
